A group of advocates gathered at the State House Thursday to protest the deal, which they say, was constructed in a back room without their input.

Massachusetts lawmakers reacjed a deal to increase pay for bar advocates — attorneys hired by the state to represent defendants who cannot afford an attorney — which they hope will end a work stoppage that forced the dismissal of numerous criminal cases.
