EAST LANSING – The first game didn’t count but the second is for survival. No. 3 seed Michigan State (27-7) will face No. 2 UConn (31-5) in the Sweet 16 on Friday (9:45 p.m., CBS) in a rematch of an exhibition the Huskies won in October.
Michigan State is a two-time national champion. It won its first title in 1979 under legendary coach Jud Heathcote and a Magic Johnson-led team. The Spartans won it all again in 2000, with Mateen Cleaves and Morris Peterson leading the way in a win over Florida.
MSU is coming into their meeting with North Dakota State with a bad taste in their mouth after falling to UCLA in the Big Ten Tournament.
