Tesla's battery megafactory in Shanghai, for manufacturing its megapack batteries, has launched production on Tuesday, Chinese official news agency Xinhua said.

The Shanghai facility is Tesla's first Megafactory outside the United States and marks another major investment in China following the Gigafactory Shanghai car manufacturing plant.

After nine months of construction, Tesla's Megapack battery factory in Shanghai went into operation on February 11, with significant importance for both the US-based electric carmaker and China's massive energy storage industry. The launch of the new plant was a bright spot in a week of woes for Tesla.

Tesla is to expand its presence in Australia with a “re-manufacturing” facility to be built at Collie in Western Australia’s southwest to service its grid-scale and residential battery energy storage products.

As Tesla's first energy storage Megafactory outside the United States, the new Lin-gang plant only took nine months from groundbreaking, which took place in May 2024, to its official operation. This was three months faster than when Tesla's EV gigafactory in Lin-gang became operational in January 2020.
