In the U.S., there have been 70 reported cases of bird flu in humans since 2024, but none in North Carolina and no known person-to-person spread of the virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. One person reportedly died in Louisiana.

There are 70 confirmed cases of the bird flu among humans in the U.S., as of Tuesday. The CDC said the current public health risk is low.

The virus  has already been found in birds in the area, so people should "strongly consider" these birds are positive, the DEC said.
