While diving at Ni’ihau last week, we observed three Hawaiian monk seals in what appeared to be an argument. Two male seals swam in front of me and rested approximately 50 feet apart, unusually close for male seals underwater. A third male was vocalizing and more active. Yesterday we saw this individual at Ni’ihau; we hadn’t seen him since July. The year prior I thought he was going to lose his eye after I’m assuming a fight with another male monk seal.
