History: The Roman Republican Victoriatus, a silver coin minted from 211-170 BC. It was created during the throes of the Second Punic War as General Hannibal ran rampant through mainland Italy. Weighing initially around 3.4 grams, about 1/2 of a quadrigatus and 3/4 of a denarius, it was intended to replace the popular drachmas that circulated in Southern Italy and Gaul.
